Dust, a tall bone and ochre textured painting in a hotel lobby with a bronze reception desk

When people see a large painting in person, they stop.

Walk into a hotel, a restaurant or a meeting room and meet a very large painting. From across the room you see a clash of light and dark, and your eye is led around the canvas from one point to the next.

Step closer and the surface keeps revealing more. The texture and the fine detail change with each angle and each kind of light.

A Way Through, a tall dark textured painting above a sofa in a double-height living room

A Way Through

61 × 122 cm  ·  Acrylic and texture mediums

The rough texture and darkness represent the things we carry beneath the surface. Old hurt, baggage, parts of ourselves we find difficult to face. Things that can shape how we think and act without us noticing.

The light represents the moment we begin to see them. When we can observe a thought, question a familiar reaction, and choose a different response.

I left the roughness visible. You don’t have to have everything resolved to change course.

For me, that’s the hope in this painting. There’s a way through.

The Void, a large black textured painting above a console in a stone-walled room Sold

The Void

91 × 91 cm  ·  Acrylic and texture mediums

This piece reflects the quiet emptiness that can arrive after reaching a goal once thought to hold all the answers. It speaks to recurring patterns, the shadow self, and the search for meaning beyond achievement. I really love the shadows that the textured broken circle casts.

Dust, a tall painting in bone and ochre with a dark lower band, hung on the wall of a hotel lobby

Dust

80 × 120 cm  ·  Acrylic and texture mediums

Dust begins in a place that feels heavy and difficult to leave. Its dark, swampy layers carry the pull of vice and hedonism, the point where pleasure becomes something that holds you.

Above, the surface opens into a pale haze. I see the two small black marks as traces of myself rising out of that weight, suspended like dust.

The escape is fragile. There is freedom in that moment of suspension, with the pull of the depths still present. Dust can lift, drift and settle again.

Quiet Rupture, a square green and cream textured painting with a red mark, in a lounge Sold

Quiet Rupture

100 × 100 cm  ·  Acrylic and texture mediums

The rough green surface feels rooted in the earth. The pale field above opens into sky. A black mark descends with the sharpness of a blade. Lower down, a raised scar carries a thin red drip, bringing something bodily and vulnerable into the painting.

For me, the work holds two kinds of opposites together: earth and sky, violence and calm. The wound draws the eye, surrounded by space and stillness.

I see a kind of unity in that coexistence. The wound, the earth and the open sky all belong to the same whole.

Meet your artist

I started painting in 2021, inspired by Bob Ross. Oil landscapes came first, and I loved them.

But I wanted to stop painting an image, so I moved to abstracts and let intuition take over. Letting go of what a painting should be can be scary. It is also a useful skill in life: not being too attached to things.

Today I paint in studios in Lisbon and Malaysia, using acrylic built up with modelling paste, limestone powder, plaster of Paris and graphite powder. The vibe is moody. You might see a landscape in it, or something else entirely.

I paint large for the feeling it gives people: curiosity, and the sense that there is more to find the closer they get.
